“It’s a low-margin industry, so it’s always a cost-benefit analysis,” Larry Cornman told me, in Boulder. “But year in and year out, people are getting hurt.” The best way to prevent injuries, Cornman believes, is to avoid turbulence altogether. Or a pilot might be too busy trying to control the plane to comment on the weather at all. “By the time they make the report, it’s happened way back there,” Cornman said. “So the locations aren’t very accurate, either.”
