Kermit and its sister plane—another P-3 Orion, nicknamed Miss Piggy—have flown into hundreds of hurricanes since 1976 and never lost a passenger. The Air Force, in that same period, has flown thousands of hurricane flights in its Lockheed WC-130s, also without a single fatality. Both sets of planes were designed for the military: the P-3 is like a flying tank, Marks told me; the WC-130 is more like a flying barn.
