PrivacyPass has two separate issuance protocols. One uses blind RSA signatures, which are more or less an exact mapping to the protocol we described above. The second one replaces the signature with a special kind of MAC scheme, which is built from an elliptic-curve OPRF scheme. MACs work very similarly to signatures, but require the secret key for verification. Hence, this version of PrivacyPass really only works in cases where the Resource and the Issuer are the same person, or where the Resource is willing to outsource verification of credentials to the Issuer.

3Don’t get me started on this “diamond open access” designation. If it costs money to publish or to read, it’s not open access, period. “Oh, you’d like your car to come with a steering wheel and brakes? You’ll need our ‘diamond’ package.”

The bad news is a usual open-source problem. Yes, Windhawk’s mods are all open-source, and you can view their source code yourself. But many of them aren’t written by the core developer. Do you trust them? Are you equipped to audit their security? Do you want to trust that these mods will behave as advertised and not cause problems? Are you sure they aren’t going to spy on you? I haven’t heard of a problem with Windhawk mods yet, but the potential risks here make me uncomfortable.
